Rose Riot | The Hollow Crown (2018/19)
Directed by Damien Ryan
Written by William Shakespeare, Adapted by Damien Ryan
December 8, 2018 to January 27, 2019
“let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of the death of kings…” Richard II
he Hollow Crown spans the reign of the lavish and wasteful Richard II, torn from his perch by the brilliant and persuasive tongue of a true political animal, Henry IV, a thief who steals a crown and cannot sleep with guilt as her bedfellow, while her famous daughter has an equally uncomfortable bedfellow, another thief, Falstaff, Shakespeare’s greatest comic creation. She will cloud and pollute the rise of England’s most famous ‘sun’ – Henry V, the cracked mirror to the gallant Hotspur who, having once tasted blood, becomes the unstoppable destroyer of worlds.
In this raucous cycle you will meet kings and despots, rebels and soldiers, thinker and thieves. From the Shrewsbury to Agincourt, you will witness the fiercest and most unlikely of battles – in the fields, the corridors, the bedrooms and the hearts of the realm.
“Once more into the breach dear friends” for this exhilarating ride through a history that was not interested in facts and figures or even the particular events of a British Isle, but in the universal act of living, ruling and dying in any nation, among any people, at any time. This is human history made flesh, a play about how what it means to live in “this best garden in the world” but be unable to make it grow. This is a story about us.

Production Reviews
"Director Damien Ryan’s theatrical genius is on full display in this must-see rendition of Shakespeare’s timeless history cycle."
"Calling them "history" or "chronicle" plays makes them sound as dry as an empty sherry glass. In fact they fizz with beauty, comedy, drama and humanity..."
"The Hollow Crown is magnificent entertainment of scale and thrill with a carry beyond its hours"
