BY PETER SHAFFER
DIRECTED BY MARGARET THANOS
“THE NORMAL IS THE GOOD SMILE IN A CHILD’S EYES… AND THE DEAD STARE IN A MILLION ADULTS”
A site-specific spectacular event.
This Tony Award and New York Critics Circle Award winning masterpiece by Peter Shaffer is simply one of the finest plays ever written – its concerns, its expression, its ideas as compelling and dangerously powerful as have ever been uttered in drama.
SFJ has a celebrated history of activating unknown spaces and creating indelible experiences for audiences and the atmospheric 200 year old stables shed at Bella Vista Farm, site of our inspiring vision of The Crucible in 2014, becomes the home for this scintillating new production of Equus, directed by Margaret Thanos (I Hate People; or Timon of Athens).
This explosive play has taken audiences by storm all over the world, Equus is Peter Shaffer’s exploration of the way modern society has destroyed our ability to feel and express passion. Alan Strang is a disturbed young man whose dangerous obsession with horses leads him to commit an unspeakable act of violence. As psychiatrist Martin Dysart struggles to understand the motivation for Alan’s brutality, he is increasingly drawn into Alan’s web and way of seeing until he’s eventually forced to question his own relationship to the world and his psyche.
What is normal? What is transgressive? How do we rein in the things we feel? Scintillating, shocking, and sensual, Equus is a must-see experience in 2025.
