Julia Cotton | Biography

Julia began her career as a classical dancer with The Australian Ballet, later joined contemporary dance company Australian Dance Theatre and was a founding member and co-director of visual performance group Etcetera. As well as choreographing for dance companies, for opera and for circus she directed street theatre for the Adelaide Festival and puppet theatre for the Perth International Festival. With Etcetera she toured to Canada and the UK. She has also choreographed for Company B Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, Theatre of Image and was Artistic Director of Australian Theatre of the Deaf.

Julia worked at NIDA with esteemed movement teacher Keith Bain OAM. On his retirement she became Head of Movement for the Acting Department and the post-graduate Movement Studies course.

Since leaving NIDA Julia has worked for Company B Belvoir on The Book of Everything and Theatre of Image’s Little Beauty for the National Portrait Gallery. She directed Backstage at the Ballets Russes for the National Gallery of Australia and performed at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Julia has recently taught movement for the acting course at WAAPA. She also teaches at the International Screen Academy and for the NIDA Corporate Performance Program.
