Education Season 2021

“The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together”

All’s Well That Ends Well

2020 was indeed a ‘mingled yarn’ of good and ill, and no doubt you as educators, like us as theatre makers, found yourselves sitting cross-legged on the floor trying to untangle a ball of wool that seemed to defy solutions – how do you suddenly shift an entire curriculum online, all that scope and sequencing, all those units of work, all those inspirational moments in live classrooms when you helped a penny drop for a kid trying to unlock a poem or a play, the ‘grace notes’ with which you manage to help 30 different types of learners all see with clarity and feel enlivened by understanding something complex. But you did it, you shifted an entire world of learning into a whole new medium and back again before governments and experts had even provided guidance or support to do it.

Teachers are among the profoundly unsung heroes of Covid19, not only for getting back into populated schools during a pandemic to help parents and students return to their lives, but for helping a generation of kids get through something so extraordinary with so little disruption to their learning. All sectors of our community owe you an immense debt of gratitude and respect, and certainly the arts community and Sport for Jove Theatre salute you for your humane exceptionalism in the year 2020, and hope 2021 can reward you accordingly or at least provide a less entangled yarn of life for us all. To our colleagues in English and Drama classrooms across Australia, thank you.

We cannot know what lies ahead but we too have dedicated our year to finding solutions, both live and online, and we cannot wait to again share stories with you in 2021. As Shakespeare said...

2021 Productions:

Over the past three years, our Education Program has grown exponentially, and in 2021 we offer 3 mainstage productions: Shakespeare’s Othello, Macbeth and The Tempest

Performances will take place for school audiences at The Seymour Centre (Sydney) and Riverside Theatres (Parramatta). We will offer detailed Student Resource Kits for all works in the season.

Both the Seymour Centre and Riverside Parramatta are working hard to ensure that their venues are safe for audiences to attend.

You can find out more about their COVID-Safe plans below.

2021 Symposiums:

“ YOU MADE A DIFFICULT PLAY ACCESSIBLE AND MEANINGFUL TO STUDENTS IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME. I WILL CERTAINLY BE MAKING A BOOKING FOR NEXT YEAR’S HSC GROUP.”

Teacher, Marian College

Lecture and scene work interspersed with expert commentary from Damien Ryan and his team – exploring famous scenes and speeches in multiple ways, opening up diverse critical readings, unlocking language and character, hearing actors discuss the plays’ famous ambiguities and challenges, and answering students’ questions.

A complete, hands-on experience that combines the unfiltered relationship students need with the plays’ action and narrative while also ensuring they are ‘watching with understanding’, in other words, extracting the key ingredients and critical thinking required to write on the plays under exam conditions.

Don’t miss it!

Shakespeare Residencies:

Our in-school residency program offers the choice of an immersive and entirely practical 5-day or 3-day experience for students in any year group, investigating Shakespeare’s plays, world, characters and language through action.

Straight onto the stage with professional actors and directors, the students learn through doing and understanding, engaging in fresh and highly accessible ways. Staff, parents and the whole school community are brought together to celebrate a performance showcase, fuelled by a wealth of discovery about the value and beauty of these plays.

The 2021 Shakespeare Carnival:

Registrations are now open for the Shakespeare Carnival 2021!

In 2021 the Shakespeare Carnival will adapt to changing conditions. We aim to gather to celebrate the achievements and performances of our participants but are ready to shift to an online format if that is safer for our students.

Shakespeare knew about pandemics and his work helps us understand how to live in a time of uncertainty by exploring the complexity of human relations and engaging with the contradictions and paradoxes of life – all while telling stories filled with human passion and silly jokes.

Raise the profile of the arts in your school and allow the students who shine on stage to be rewarded and lauded for their achievements and represent your school at higher levels of The Shakespeare Carnival!

The Second Age Project

The Second Age Project is back in 2021 offering exciting training and performance opportunities to enthusiastic and talented young performers in their ‘second age’ (school-age)!

In 2021, The Second Age Project offers extracurricular acting training, rehearsal and performance opportunities.

The Second Age Project now offers students the opportunity to take part In-Person or Online!

Following the successful implementation of online classes in 2020, we are excited to extend this online offering in 2021 for regional young actors or those unable to participate in our in-person production for other reasons.
