Richard Cottrell | Biography

Richard Cottrell has had a long and distinguished career as a theatre and opera director in Australia, Britain and North America. He was the Artistic Director of the Bristol Old Vic, the Associate Director Of the Stratford Festival, Ontario and Artistic Director of the Nimrod Theatre. For Sydney Theatre Company, Richard directed the highly successful productions of Loot, Travesties and Ying Tong  -  A Walk With The Goons. His other directing credits for STC include Australia Day, Vita and Virginia, She Stoops To Conquer, Lettice and Lovage.  In Australia Richard has directed Arms and The Man, Wild Honey, The Merchant Of Venice, All’s Well That Ends Well, The Winter’s Tale, Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the Nimrod Theatre, When The Wind Blows  for Belvoir Street, The Revenger’s Tragedy for STCSA,  Things We Do For Love, Neville’s Island, Henceforward for Marian Street, Britannicus, Camino Real For Jane Street.  In The UK Richard’s credits include Three Hours After Marriage for the Royal Shakespeare Company; The Rivals, The School for Scandal, Lady Windermere’s Fan for Chichester Festival; Hamlet, Macbeth, Troilus and Cressida, Cabaret, Destiny, the Provok’d Wife for Bristol Old Vic. Richard’s other international work includes Richard II, The Country Wife, All’s Well That Ends Well for Stratford, Ontario; The Uneasy Chair for Playwrights' Horizons, New York; The Woman Destroyed for E59E, New York; Indian Ink for the Canadian Stage Company, Toronto; King Lear for the National Theatre of Portugal. His opera credits include Andrea Chenier, Tannhauser for the Victoria State Opera and The Merry Widow for the Opera Theatre of St Louis. Richard’s translations include plays by Racine, Feydeau, Ionesco, Chekov and adaptations of Howard’s End, A Room With A View and The Longest Journey. This year he'll be directing Arms and the Man for the Sydney Theatre Company. His book, Looking At Paintings, A Private View was published by Murdoch Books in 2009.
