James Bell | Biography

Graduating from WAAPA with a BA in Musical Theatre, James quickly achieved success when he was cast as “Danny”, a key role in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s “The Joy Of Text” directed by Aidan Fennessy in 2011. He starred again for MTC & the Black Swan Theatre Company as “Tony Stewart” playing a pivotal role in “National Interest” directed again by Aidan Fennessy in Melbourne and Perth. 2013 had him touring around Australia with the National Theatre and Global Creatures Production of “Warhorse” where he was cast as Billy & understudied the Lead Role of Albert many times.

Now living in Sydney, James was cast as “Misha” in the Sydney Theatre Company’s 2014 production of “Children of the Sun”, written by Maxim Gorky, adapted by Andrew Upton and directed by Kip Williams. In 2015, James took on the lead role of “Evan” in the Outhouse Theatre Company’s play “The Aliens”, written by Annie Baker & directed by Craig Baldwin. It was from this lead role James was nominated and Won an Award for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role in an Independent Production at the Sydney Theatre Awards in Sydney 2015. Following this, James was cast as “Gabe” in Black Swan Theatre Company’s “Next to Normal”, a Pulitzer and Tony Award Winning Rock Musical, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, music by Tom Kitt and directed by Perth’s own Adam Mitchell.

Apart from James’ love of Acting, he is also a Musician/Singer/Songwriter, can play the guitar and piano. He is currently in a band called “Camden Manor” gigging around Sydney.

Born and raised in Perth, James has other stage credits to his name including “Bobby” in “Company”, “Lord Evelyn Oakleigh” in “Anything Goes”, “Kurt Von Trapp” in the SEL and GPO production of “The Sound of Music” and roles in “Cabaret”, “Ragtime” and “Hair”. TV credits include the role of Jason Bloch in the Nine Network Series of “Sleepover Club 2” with Southern Star TV.
